Empowering Africans with education and network

The Scholarship Foundation provides an incredible opportunity for brilliant and enlightened high school seniors of African descent to further their tertiary education in the United States.

We rely on the generosity of our donors to ensure college scholarships are available to young Africans. If you are looking to make an impact, kindly support us.

Our Story

Prior to 2020, sub-Saharan Africa only had 9.4% enrollment in tertiary education, compared to the global average of 38%. Post-pandemic, several African countries experienced budget cuts from the already-less-than-average allocation to the education sector.

Shugabere Academic Scholarship (SAS) was born to empower Africans with education and network! It ensures African students can further their tertiary education despite financial struggles that may or may not have been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since education brings literacy, and with literacy comes the knowledge to solve problems, through SAS, we are investing in education. We’re on a mission to ensure that every African striving to get a good tertiary education in the United States is supported financially!

Our Founder

The Shugabere Foundation was born as a tribute to the kindest people our founder, Dr. Chidiebere (Chichi) Eze was blessed to encounter during her final year in professional school. Her parents had zealously covered the total costs of education for their children from birth, out-of-pocket and debt-free.

However, during her final year, her family had a financial hiccup. With a GPA well over 3.3, she served on several leadership boards and organizations while working part-time. She requested an academic scholarship from her institution or an agreement to repay after a job was secured post-graduation.

The school declined options for repayment and threatened to denounce all years of graduate study if payments weren't made by the deadline. Dr. Eze reached out to her community and within 10 days, over $10,000 was raised after which the school waived the tuition balance. She graduated with her doctorate in pharmacy and certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Our Goals

The Shugabere Academic Scholarship (SAS) awards one-time scholarships in the amount of up to $3,000 to recipients annually.

EDUCATION

We strive to increase the number of African graduates annually, as well as eliminate premature school withdrawals. We provide our awardees with mentorships and guidance to ensure overall success.

NETWORKING

Connections made through the organization can lead to potential mentorships committed to excellence. These relationships could provide professional, career and mental health support, during your education pursuit.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

With our guidance and support through scholarships and networking, our structure is designed to open doors to the possibility of new and exciting internships in careers that will propel you to a successful future.
